The Painter of the Sound, Bach

Today, I introduced Dr. Schweitzer's words first.

 

It's a familiar name, right? Yes, Dr. Schweitzer, who many people know as a doctor.

 

Dr. Schweitzer is also a musician and organist, and is famous for his studies of Bach.

 

Dr. Schweitzer, who studied many of Bach's songs and his life, described Bach as a poet of sound rather than a poet of sound.

 

Why did they express it like that?

 

 

 

Bach hid many invisible symbols such as numbers in his music.

 

But in addition to the hidden symbols, it is also famous for using direct visual symbols.

 

Let me introduce some of them.

 

 

 

 

Bach's favorite composition technique is the "crucifixion type."

 

A crucifixion means to mark the shape of the cross on the score using the height of the note.

 

 

 

 

The first song in Bach's "Little Organ Collection" (BWV 599 Nun, komm, der Heiden Heiland, The savior of the Gentiles, come), these crucifixions are repeated 14 times in the vocal tract except for the bass.

 

The number 14 means Bach.

 

 

 

 

Bach used these crucifixions in many of his songs.

 

This form is often found especially in the words Christ or Kreuz.

 

 

 

 

Bach even made this cross using his own name.

 

Bach's name, BACH, happens to be the same as the German phoneme, BACH.

 

It becomes Bb-A-C-B in English phoneme, and means “si plat - la - do - si."

 

Bach wrote songs about his name in this way, here too, the crucifixion is found.

 

 

 

 

There's another interesting thing about this song.

 

If you look at the first two beats and the last two beats of the song, you can see that the same harmony and the same note are used.

 

He composed the first song of the 46-songs in "Little Organ Collection” the same beginning and end.

 

It means a lot.

 

This is because Bach symbolized Jesus' words, "I am the beginning and the end, the Alpha and Omega," through this technique.

 

 

 

 

In the middle of the song, you can see that all the notes that were moving fast stopped except for the bass.

 

This can be seen as a visual and auditory effect to express "the whole world is surprised" in the lyrics.

 

 

 

 

Like this, you can find many symbols that are hidden or exposed in Bach's music.

 

These traces seem to show his serious attitude toward music.
