I won't go on vacation until I die!

Last time, I introduced cellist Pablo Casals as one of the greatest cellists of the 20th century.

Today's cellist, ‘Mstislav Rostropovich’, is also one of the greatest cellists of the 20th century, along with Pablo Casals.

He is also famous as a teacher of cellist 'Jang Han-na', who is growing as a conductor.

It's hard to express his performance simply by numbers, but you can guess how much he is respected by looking at the number of pieces dedicated to him.

Many classical composers dedicate their songs to outstanding performers.

And Rostropovich is also famous for person who is dedicated many songs by composers.

There is even a saying that

"the list of modern songs for the cello of the 20th century can be completed with just the songs dedicated to him."

Rostropovich is also a sincere and careful hard worker.

He was so humble in front of music that he recorded Bach's ‘Unaccompanied Cello Suite,’ called the Old Testament of the Cello, only after he turned 64.

Also, at the age of 70, he was such a sincere musician that he promised not to take a vacation until he died.

Rostropovich was also an activist who fought for freedom.

During the former Soviet era, Rostropovich defended the anti-establishment writer Solzhenitsyn and sent a letter of protest after Soviet authorities harshly criticized him for winning the 1970 Nobel Prize in Literature.

This forced him and his wife to endure harsh times under surveillance, with overseas concerts banned, and later he fled to the United States via Switzerland in 1974.

It wasn't until 1990 that Rostropovich was able to return to his homeland.

And in 1989, there was an event where Rostropovich deeply touched the hearts of people around the world.

During the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989, he played Bach's ‘Unaccompanied Cello Suite’ in front of the collapsed wall, and music fans around the world are deeply moved by his singing of peace.

Cellist Rostropovich, who sang this song of freedom and peace, is nicknamed 'Slava', which means 'glory'.

Today, I'm going to upload a video of Slava playing in front of the Berlin Wall.

Please enjoy it.
