Cimbalom - from the West to the East
Yanggeum (양금 [洋琴, 揚琴])
Musical instruments introduced from the Qing Dynasty during the reign of King Yeongjo of the Joseon Dynasty.
Musical instruments used in orchestration such as “Yeong san hoe sang” or in conjunction with Danso.
Korean musical instruments ‘Yanggeum’.
Have you heard of it?
Then, which country is this instrument from?
This instrument is the Hungarian folk instrument 'Cimbalom'.
It looks similar, right?
In fact, it can be viewed as the same instrument.
Yanggeum is recorded as ‘Gura Cheolsa Geum (區邏鐵絲琴)’ in the literature.
It means string instruments that from Europe.
But the name Yanggeum has become common.
In ‘Yang-geum’, ‘Yang’ means Western, and ‘geum’ means ‘Geomungo’ which is Korean string instruments.
So this name also suggests instrument from the West.
Originating in ancient Assyria and Persia, this stringed instrument was propagated in three directions,
One branch spread to Spain and Western Europe around the 12th century,
The second branch spread to Turkey and Hungary,
The third branch was introduced to China around the 16th century and was introduced to the Korea during the Qing Dynasty.
This is how it is recorded in ‘Instrument’ one chepter of the book ‘Damheonseo’ by Hong Dae-yong about Yanggeum.
“Yanggeum came from the West, which was used by China in imitation.
Since the iron cord is attached to the paulownia board.
The sound is like a bell or stone percussion when heard from a distance.
The sound is too large and strong, and it is too light and flying sound, so it is not up to ‘Geomungo’ or a stone purcussion.
The small one has 12 strings and the big one has 17 strings.
The big one’s sound is grander and clearer.”
Yanggeum is also called the British dulcimer in addition to the name 'Chimbalom'.
Today, I'm going to upload Intermezzo from the ‘Háry János Suite’ by Hungarian composer Zoltán Kodály.
Let's watch Chimbalom's collaboration.
