Symphony? Philharmonic? Chamber? - Various names for orchestra

Symphony Orchestra, Philharmonic Orchestra, Chamber Orchestra..

What's the difference between the different names that call an orchestra?

First, let's talk about Symphony Orchestra and Philharmonic Orchestra.

To get to the point, these two names are currently used without much difference.

So why is it called differently?

There is a theory that the reason depends on the background of the orchestra when it was founded.

The orchestra, which was founded with individual sponsorship, is named a Philharmonic,

And the orchestra that a certain organization, such as a company or institution, is in charge of finance, is named Symphony.

From the current perspective, the ‘symphony’ in which the organization is in charge of finances may seem to be higher than the ‘Philharmonic' made with individual sponsorship.

But what we're talking about here is individual means the nobles and bourgeoisie of the past.

The Philharmonic was run with donations from them, so they didn't open tickets to common people and played only for their sponsors.

The common people couldn't even watch the performance.

On the other hand, the Symphony Orchestra was a performance organization created to improve the cultural welfare of ordinary people in local cities and other cities.

In the 19th century, concert culture, which was held for admission to a paying audience, began to become commonplace, and the orchestra played music familiar to the common people, and tickets were also cheap.

Of course, keep in mind that these two names are not used separately now.

So how are chamber orchestras different?

It's scale.

In the Chamber Orchestra, 'Chamber' means 'room'.

So Chamber Orchestra is an orchestra that plays indoors.

It means an orchestra of a smaller size (10-30 people) than a typical size (70-120 people) we know of.

In addition to this when performing stage works such as opera and ballet, there are "Opera Orchestra" played in the orchestra pit, a space between the stage and the audience, and "Broadcasting Symphony Orchestra" made by the broadcasting station.

Today, I will upload Chamber Orchestra’s perform among many orchestras.

The Deutsches Kammerorchester Berlin played ‘Die Fledermaus’ by Johann Strauss II at the Seoul Arts Center Concert Hall in South Korea.

Please enjoy it.
