When I buy a classical record, what criteria should I choose?
What music included?
Who is the composer?
Who is the performer? and so on
There will be many considerations in purchasing the album.
Did you know that one of these considerations could include the name of the "Record Company"?
Today, to help you choose an album, I'd like to introduce a classical record company.
The first company I'm going to introduce is Deutsche Grammophon (DG) label in Germany.
DG is a record company that represented by yellow label.
The company is a phonograph manufacturer created by German-born recording engineer Emil Berliner on December 6, 1898.
Originally called DGG (Deutsche Grammophon Gesellschaft), it was changed to DG when Gesellschaft fell out in the 70s.
Originally, in the classical label, DG and EMI in the UK were selected as representative companies.
However, as EMI recently closed due to financial difficulties and moved on to Warner Music, DG becomes the only classical record company to remain in its original form.
DG also became a hot topic in Korea when it signed an exclusive contract with pianist Jo Sung-jin, the winner of the Chopin Competition.
It is the second time that a Korean musician has signed a contract with DG headquarters since the Seoul Philharmonic Orchestra (2011). Jung Myung-hoon was signed as a conductor in 1990.
DG's albums can be purchased with some confidence because it is difficult to release records with DG unless the skills, reputation, and popularity of individual conductors and musicians are evenly harmonized.
The next company I will introduce is EMI.
If DG was called the "yellow tag," EMI was called the "red tag" and had a huge impact on the music industry.
It boasts the longest history among record companies, but goes bankrupt due to poor management and is acquired by Warner Classic.
While many were disappointed with EMI's bankruptcy, Warner Classic expanded its classical record business with the acquisition of EMI's huge archive, with most of its masterpieces continuing to be released under the name Warner Music.
The following is the British label DECCA.
The record company has a wide range of repertoires, but it is particularly strong in vocal records.
They worked with vocal superstars such as Cecilia Bartoli in Italy, Angela Gheorghiu in Romania, Luciano Pavarotti and Placido Domingo.
In addition, record companies such as ECM in Germany and RCA in the United States are classified as major record companies.
There can be a variety of reasons for choosing an album.
However, if you don't have a favorite album yet, or if you don't know much about classical music, I think choosing a major album that has been recognized for a long time will help ease the difficulty of choosing.
I'm going to upload Karajan's music today.
This is because there is a company that especially loved Herbert von Karajan among the albums I introduced.
It's Deutsche Grammophon.
Let's listen to the first movement of Beethoven No.5 by the Berlin Philharmonic conducted by Karajan.
