Requiem for the living

What does it mean to die?

Humans fear and worry about death until the moment they face death,

and sometimes worship it.

Just as the "infinity of the universe" without knowing its end or the "under the sea" without measuring its depth draws fear from deep inside our hearts, the world after death, which is hard to guess, comes to us as fear.

Efforts to resist the fear of death come in many different ways around the world.

In some cultures, they place their wages in the eyes of the dead, hoping to arrive safely in the afterlife of Hades, and in others, they put valuables in their graves and hold ancestral rites in hopes that they will be abundant in their lives after death.

This effort is not only a human wish for the happiness of the loved one, but also an effort to overcome fear.

This effort has also been made in the history of Western music.

It's the song, "The Requiem," which is a song that pray for the peace of the dead.

In the Christian worldview, it's a prayer to lead the dead, who are not yet in a position of rest, to a position of rest.

Thus, composers of Western music history have composed the song for the peace of the dead.

But one composer writes a requiem for the Remainers, not the Leavers.

The composer's name is "Johannes Brahms."

And the woman Brahms wanted to console in writing this song is Schumann's wife, Clara Schumann.

Schumann and his wife Clara were Brahms' benefactors.

Schumann made Brahms's name known to the music society by praising the song he composed in his review magazine "New magazine for music".

And Clara Schumann, a famous pianist, played Brahms' songs herself, contributing greatly to promoting them to the world.

The three musicians lived together for a long time and shared musical concerns,

Naturally, Brahms has a crush on Clara, who is 14 years old.

Meanwhile, when Schumann died while battling mental illness, Brahms writes a song to console Clara, who is in grief.

But it wasn't for the dead (Schumann), it was for the Remainers (Clara).

It was a worried heart of a man who was worried about a woman he loved.

Brahms consoled her in this way through the lyrics of the first movement.

(Matthew 5:4)

Blessed are they that mourn: for they shall be comforted.

(Psalms 126:5-6)

They that sow in tears shall reap in joy.

He that goeth forth and weepeth, bearing precious seed,

shall doubtless come again with rejoicing, bringing his sheaves with him.

In Vatican, there is a work by Michelangelo called "Pieta."

It's a sculpture of the Virgin Mary holding the dead Jesus.

One of the complicated and subtle emotions I feel in this work is the sadness of a mother who lost her son.

There are three types of death.

The death of "They" in the daily flood of articles,

The death of "You" that I loved,

And the death of "I"..

Brahms knew.

Rather than the death of "I" who might even feel sad,

The death of the "You" I loved would be more painful..

That's why she had to be consoled for losing "You".

I'm posting a German Requiem composed by Brahms.

It's a song that he revised and revised to comfort her,

who he had loved for 40 years.

Please enjoy.
