How much is Beethoven's score?

December 22, 2015

Brendan Ryan, a British appraiser, visits her house after receiving a call from a woman who wants to sell her antiques.

And Ryan, following her to room, finds a sheet of music on the wall of the hallway and shouts.

'‘Oh my God, that’s Beethoven.”

This score has been kept by the family for more than 100 years,

but no one thought it writen by Beethoven.

Ryan immediately asked his friend, Professor Carmelo Comberiati of Manhattanville University, to investigate.

After weeks of investigate, the score turns out to be Beethoven's No. 117, "King Stephen," which was created in 1811.

Then, Beethoven's score sold at an auction in the United States was priced at $120,000.

Of this, $100,000 is received by the woman who kept the sheet music.

It's not Beethoven's main work and it's not played very often.

But you can see that Beethoven's score is very valuable considering that it was sold at a high price.

So how did Beethoven keep these precious scores?

Listen to the testimony of Ries Ferdinand (1784-1838), a German composer and pianist who learned from Beethoven in the early 1800s and contributed to the first editing of Beethoven's biographical material.

"Beethoven did not value his handwriting at all. Once printed, most of the works were scattered on the floor with other scores in the next room or in the middle of the studio. I used to organize his scores, but when he started looking for something, it was all messed up. If it was the original handwritten copy of the work already printed, it could have been taken at that time. If I had asked for it, he would certainly have given it away without a moment's delay."

Beethoven's score, now so precious.

But Beethoven himself didn't seem to realize the value.

Today, I'm going to introduce King Stephen Overture, which was discovered in 200 years.

Have a nice day.
